Blackboard Training Sign-Up

The Blackboard Learning Institute (BLI) is composed of a series of sessions to train faculty in the most efficient and effective practices of using the Blackboard LMS (Learning Management System) in course design, file management, and instructional delivery.

Most BLI sessions are held on the Main Campus, at the Technology Training Center (LB 216) on the main floor of the Library inside the Center for Excellence. Some sessions are held at the Chico Center, rooms will be designated when you choose a session date. Please plan to arrive on time and stay for the entire session in order to receive credit for taking the session. Do not plan on working on your own Blackboard course during the sessions. Please plan to bring note taking materials if needed. Instructional breaks are provided.

Please note that the BLI is available only to currently employed Butte College faculty members.

IDST-10 (formerly Project Oriented Pedagogy - POP)

PREREQUISITE: Blackboard Introduction, all four Tool Specialist sessions (Course Management, Communications, Assessments, and Assignments).

DESCRIPTION: It is assumed that participants have familiarity with the use of Blackboard. The course presents Butte College specific procedures in course development and gives instructors an opportunity to begin work on their actual proposed or revamped online or hybrid course.

What Is IDST 10?

This is a fully online course, taught by Dan Barnett. It is the last component required to be certified to teach online or hybrid courses at Butte College. A hybrid course is defined a course that replaces some regular seat time with mandatory time on the Internet.

IDST-10 is a 4-week, CR/NC online course (3-weeks during the Winter session), which must be completed AFTER the face-to-face Blackboard workshops. IDST-10 assumes skill in using Blackboard and so the the Intro, Course Management, Communications, Assessments, and Assignments workshops are prerequisites.

Online instructor certification includes successful completion of the following:

Face-to-face Workshops

  • Intro to Blackboard (required of all Blackboard users)
  • Course Management (3-hour workshop)
  • Communications (3-hour workshop)
  • Assessments (3-hour workshop)
  • Assignments (3-hour workshop)

Online Course

  • IDST-10, Training for Online Instructors (1.5-unit Butte College course)

NOTE: IDST-10 replaces POP (Project Oriented Pedagogy), but the content is the same.

How Do I Sign Up For IDST-10?

You enroll in the class just as would any prospective student. If as a faculty member you have not previously taken a Butte College course, step-by-step procedures are given below.

You will need to pay a unit fee of $30 by credit card which will be refunded once you’ve successfully completed IDST-10. As a faculty member, transportation fees are waived but to waive the Student Activities Fees you must call the Student Activities Office (details below). Only the unit fees will be reimbursed.

You may register for IDST-10 in advance but you must have completed all prerequisite training by the first day of class or you will be blocked from the course pending a suitable arrangement with the instructor.

What Are The Enrollment Steps?

HAVE YOU PREVIOUSLY ENROLLED IN A BUTTE COLLEGE COURSE AS A FACULTY MEMBER?

  1. Log in to WebAdvisor and use the Student Menu to enroll in IDST-10.
  2. You will be asked to pay by credit card and will be charged $30 for unit fees (which will be reimbursed once you've completed the course). You may also be asked to pay an additional AS fee of $1.00 (a "rep fee") which, if paid, will also be reimbursed.
  3. WARNING--if you see additional charges (such as transportation or health fees) DO NOT PAY for the course until you can be "flagged" as faculty and the charges waived. Contact Dan Barnett (BarnettDa@butte.edu) and he will have A&R flag you as faculty. You should be able to log in to WebAdvisor within 24-48 hours and see the extra charges removed.
  4. WARNING--before you pay, if you see a Student Activities fee (usually $12) and you don't wish to have those privileges, you can contact the the Associated Students Office and ask for a waiver of Student Activity Fees. The number is 530.895-2392. (If you do this after you pay, you will receive a credit on your account but not a refund.) The Student Activities fee will not be reimbursed after you complete the course.
  5. If you pay the extra fees before being "flagged" as faculty, and wish a refund, you will be charged a fee of $10.

HAVE YOU NEVER PREVIOUSLY ENROLLED IN A BUTTE COLLEGE COURSE AS A FACULTY MEMBER?

  1. If you've never enrolled in a Butte College course, you need to use CCCApply to submit an application. Just because you have a Butte College ID number doesn't mean you're a student. You know you're a student if you have a student menu (in additional to your faculty menu) when you log into WebAdvisor. Go to the Butte College home page (www.butte.edu) and click on the Apply Now link at the bottom of the page.
  2. Within 24-48 hours after submitting your application you ought to be able to log into WebAdvisor and see your Student menu. Click on the appropriate link and enroll in IDST-10.
  3. WARNING: If you see a number of extra fees (transportation or health) in addition to the unit fee ($30) and the AS rep fee ($1.00), DO NOT PAY for the course yet.
  4. Write to Dan Barnett (BarnettDa@butte.edu) and let him know you've enrolled; he'll let A&R know you are faculty so your account can be "flagged" and the extra fees removed.
  5. Within 24-48 hours you should be able to log back into WebAdvisor and pay for IDST-10 without the additional charges, except for the unit fees of $30 and the $1.00 rep fee (both of which will be reimbursed once you've completed the course).
  6. WARNING--before you pay, if you see a Student Activities fee (usually $12) and don't wish to have those privileges, you can contact the the Associated Students Office and ask for a waiver of Student Activity Fees. The number is 530.895-2391. (If you do this after you pay, you will receive a credit on your account but not a refund.) The Student Activities fee will not be reimbursed after you complete the course.
  7. If you pay the extra fees before being "flagged" as faculty, and wish a refund, you will be charged a fee of $10.

FAQ

How will I be reimbursed the $30 unit fees and the $1.00 rep fee?

Should you elect to take the training stipend, the amount will be increased by $31 once you've completed IDST-10. The stipend will appear in a subsequent paycheck after the internal paperwork has been processed.

What if I'm applying the units received in my training to column movement?

If you've been pre-approved for column movement or longevity credit, you will not receive a cash stipend and will not be reimbursed the $30 unit fees or the $1.00 rep fee.

What if I need to drop IDST-10?

You can only receive a full refund if you drop the same day class begins. If you drop after that, you will be responsible for the unit fees paid. They will not be reimbursed since no stipend will be paid.

I'm completing my training but haven't been hired yet to teach a class. What should I do?

You'll need to complete the application and registration process and pay all the fees. If you're hired to teach a course within a year of completion of training, you'll be paid a stipend which will include reimbursement for unit fees as well as rep, transportation, and health fees, but not Student Activities fee (see instruction above for waving the Student Activities fee before you pay).

Why do I have to go through this process? I just want to teach!

Teaching an online or hybrid course is significantly different from the face-to-face classroom experience. Prospective online instructors need to learn not only what works pedagogically online, but what it's like to be an online student. IDST-10 helps ensure that instructors are as prepared as possible to develop quality online courses and to teach them with passion, skill and integrity.
